Tenax sponsors veterans’ charity Pilgrim Bandits’ English Channel rowing challenge

We were pleased to sponsor Pilgrim Bandits, a charity helping injured military and blue light personnel, in its inspiring fundraising challenge rowing across the English Channel, from Poole to Cherbourg and back again.

Setting off at 5am on 14th July from Poole harbour, a group of injured and amputee military and blue-light veterans rowed 66 miles across the busiest shipping lane in the world to Cherbourg. In France, the oars were taken up by another group of military veterans and ex-service personnel, who completed the return crossing, arriving back in Poole on 16th July.

This incredible challenge was not only an amazing personal achievement for all of those involved, it also resulted in a new Guinness World Record for the first group of amputees to cross the English Channel.

About Pilgrim Bandits

Pilgrim Bandits is a charity supporting military and blue light veterans. Funds raised go towards carrying out its incredible work, which includes:

  • Organising expeditions;
  • Applying for grants to provide specialist equipment, such as wheelchairs;
  • Providing training courses for employment and personal development;
  • Health and wellbeing services, including therapies and treatments to improve physical and mental wellbeing.

Rowing the Channel is the latest in the charity’s long list of mentally and physically challenging expeditions, which have included kayaking extraordinary distances, jumping from aircraft, running races and trekking inhospitable terrain. In the spirit of its mantra, ‘always a little further’, these adventures push injured veterans to achieve what they didn’t think possible, helping to restore their independence and self-belief.

“We were pleased to support the amazing work of Pilgrim Bandits by sponsoring its incredible rowing challenge across the English Channel,” says Tenax’s Managing Director, Andy Hughes. “Congratulations to everyone involved on such a fantastic achievement – and a new world record!”

Tenax sponsors Pilgrim Bandits’ trek to Everest Base Camp

Tenax sponsors Pilgrim Bandits’ trek to Everest Base Camp

Last year we sponsored the charity, Pilgrim Bandits, in a record-breaking fundraising challenge – an epic trek across the Himalayan Mountains to Everest Base Camp.

Established in 2007 with the help of members of the Special Forces, Pilgrim Bandits organises adventure expeditions, social events and health and wellbeing funding for military and blue light veterans. In the spirit of its mantra ‘always a little further’, each expedition is physically and mentally challenging, helping participants build confidence in their individual abilities and cultivating a feeling of team camaraderie as they undertake an epic challenge together.

The charity raises funds for its expeditions and grants to provide specialist equipment and wheelchairs for injured ex-military and emergency services personnel. It also provides training courses to help veterans into employment and provides health and wellbeing services, including therapies and treatments to improve physical and mental wellbeing.

For this challenge, the group of Everest Base Camp trekkers comprised able-bodied, disabled, and injured military veterans and blue light service personnel, including single and double amputees, as well as a member suffering from MND. This was an amazing feat of endurance and a record-breaking challenge, as the group became the largest group of disabled people ever to reach Base Camp.

And if that wasn’t impressive enough, one of the Pilgrim’s members, Hari Budha Magar, who is a former Gurkha, went one further and summited Everest – breaking another world record by becoming the first double above-the-knee amputee to reach the top of the world’s highest mountain.

Tenax’s Managing Director, Andy Hughes, said: “We were pleased to support this impressive challenge. The charity does amazing work with injured military servicemen and women and seeing what those who took part in the expedition have achieved is incredibly inspiring.”
